In April 2023, Global Community Resourcing (GCR) was proud to host the National Aged and Community Care Roundtable for Forgotten Australians (National Roundtable) official website launch after funding was secured from the Queensland Government. The website was launched alongside the Minister for Children and Youth Justice and Minister for Multicultural Affairs and the Truth, Healing and Reconciliation Taskforce. This event was held in a hybrid format, with in-person attendees at the Queensland Parliament in Brisbane and virtual attendees being able to join in live via Zoom Webinar.
Between 1940 and 1989, over 500,000 children were placed in institutions and out-of-home ‘care’ around the country, enduring abuse, and neglect of those meant to care for them. As these children have aged into adulthood, a slew of mental and physical health issues, including issues such as homelessness and substance abuse, has been the result of their care.
The National Roundtable focuses on addressing the unique needs of Forgotten Australians as they age as well as improving the current systems in place for their care. The important work this organisation provides to this overlooked group in our society is vital to those who were subject to this issue.
The National Roundtable has been working on a website that encompasses all the work they do, and to become a resource hub for Forgotten Australians and aged and community care considerations.
The website launch was one of three events held by the National Roundtable during international Care Experienced History Month 2023, which is an initiative that was first launched in Scotland in 2016. This month aims to raise awareness of the experiences and contributions of individuals who have experienced 'care', as well as to challenge stigma and discrimination. International Care Experienced History Month provides an opportunity to highlight the positive contributions that “care” experienced individuals have made to society, as well as to acknowledge the challenges they may have faced as a result of their experiences.
